CT Healthy Living Collective Prepares for Falls Prevention Awareness Week!

Falls Prevention Awareness Week is a national health campaign observed September 18 – 24, 2022 to promote awareness around falls health and injury prevention.

Many people think falling is common as we age. The truth is older adults can improve balance and strength. And the good news is that most falls can be prevented.  Taking action to address the risk of falling is an important way to stay healthy and independent as long as possible. Falls prevention activities are beneficial to everyone across the lifespan, and they can be fun!

The Collective, along with the State of CT Department of Public Health, CT Department of Aging and Disability Services, senior centers and public health districts and many more, is leading an education campaign to inform CT residents about falls prevention strategies and to inspire people to participate in community education programs that have a proven track record in reducing risk for falls.

Falls prevention is a team effort with families, caregivers, medical professionals, and community organizations all playing a role.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one-fourth of Americans aged 65+ fall each year.

Check out this no cost Falls Free Check Up Tool to learn more about falls prevention tips and find out if you or someone you know is at increased risk for falls.

NCOA’s Falls Prevention Conversation Guide can be used by caregivers. Use it if you or the person you are caring for has had a fall, is experiencing decreased mobility, is unsteady on their feet, or is fearful of falling. When needed, use it to talk with other members of your family or health care professionals about creating a falls prevention action plan.
